Coffee, Counters, and the Morning Negotiation
The counter is off limits. The cat is on the counter. A short essay on who is really in charge of the kitchen.
Every morning begins the same way. Kettle on, cat up. He arrives on the counter with a soft thump, sits next to the mug, and watches the coffee happen as if he were supervising. The rule in this house is no cats on the counter. The rule has never once been enforced before nine a.m.
Why the counter
It is high, it is warm near the kettle, and most importantly, it is where you are. A cat that jumps on the counter in the morning is not after your toast. It is after your attention at the one time of day you are standing still. The counter is simply where you keep that.
Why training does not stick
Cats learn from consequences that happen every time. If the counter is forbidden at breakfast but tolerated at midnight when nobody is looking, the lesson learned is that the counter is fine and humans are inconsistent. Which is accurate.
What actually works
- Give the cat a better spot at the same height. A stool at the end of the counter, with a folded towel on it, moved ours off the work surface in about a week.
- Keep food put away. A counter that never pays out is less interesting.
- Make the morning yours together. Five minutes of attention before the coffee, on the floor, takes the urgency out of the climb.
We did not win. We relocated the loss by eighteen inches and called it a draw.
